Describe the problem According to our outreach, the District of Columbia’s “total overall tested” figure on its dashboard represents test encounters, the number of unique individuals tested per day, with one exception: if an individual receives a positive and a negative test on the same day, they are counted twice rather than once. We should move it to the encounters field and change our capture in WS2 to match.

Note we started recording confirmed-deaths starting 5/12. The numbers have matched total-deaths each day.

This seems to be one of the hardest but most important indicia to nail down. CDC has weekly data for 14 states in the EIP and IHSP networks:

for instance new york, april 11th, CDC cume total is 22.9/100,000 which with population of approx 19.5 million would imply 4466 hospitalizations but your cume dats shows 40679. similar divergence on their noncume product but that is not well defined and not clear how to relate it to the current hospitalization number. I don't know if the CDC really means per 10,000 in which case this wouldn't be so far off or . . .?
I can't find the regular source of hospitalization data for NY on the link you provide. searching the domain:A health.ny.gov , i do find some weekly reports with numbers that track your daily hospital population fairly well. e.g March 9th: 18279 which precisely matches your archive.
At least in a limited number of states the CDC has supposedly uniform hospitaliziation data, I nonetheless can't make heads nor tails of where they could be getting these numbers compared to covidtracking, but establishing some LCD in this critical area of resource utilization seems to go begging in favor of case count and deaths.

Per the disclaimer on the CDC page you link, their data includes 100 counties -- these are not statewide totals. CDC is estimating rates based on a sample. Not meant to be used for total counts.

The 4/14 negatives number was incorrect. We are going to amend it based on hisorical information DC provides here Looking at screenshots it seems that the state reported a total number of tests and then revised it down the next day.

It seems like CDC has updated their guidelines how to count deaths. They want probable deaths (no laboratory confirmation required) added to the confirmed deaths.
How will you continue to report your numbers: Incl. probable deaths or excl. probable deaths? And if you plan to include it, how do you go about New York's 3,778 probable deaths, that are not allocated to specific dates yet?

That makes sense! Would it be fair to say that most states still report “confirmed” only (also when they do not comment on it)?
FYI: Other than for Puerto Rico, I saw that New York publishes separate figures (https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/doh/downloads/pdf/imm/covid-19-deaths-confirmed-probable-daily-04152020.pdf). As far as I am aware, these deaths cannot be fully allocated to specific days, so for my analysis I excluded these to not mess up the growth rates.
By the way, do you know if the Santa Clara Study uses “confirmed” deaths or “total” deaths? They do not specify it, but cite this website as a source (which does not specify it either, unfortunately): https://www.sccgov.org/sites/covid19/Pages/dashboard.aspx#cases

Is there an update on this? The choice of different metrics to use is leading to a large discrepancy, for example Worldometers is reporting 18,929 deaths for New York State(similar numbers on JHU map, but harder to disentangle), while COVID Tracker is reporting 14,347 deaths here.
In particular, I'm interested in understanding whether the numbers of deaths reported will change by April 26 or May 8, since this is germane to a number of forecasts I'd like to do.
For reference, this is how worldometers handles it:

I wonder if the problem is an error in the data source in which corrections for prior day results are included as adjustments on the day the error was discovered. This is common in the banking world because of the value of keeping past transactions immutable. It's poor practice for scientific data, however, because the test counts on a given day matter.
If the problem is deferred adjustment, the idea solution is to inform the data sources and ask for better quality data. Short of that, an corrective approach is to reverse the error to the best extent that the data allows: Where a daily result is negative, set that day to zero, and decrease the count of the previous day by the corresponding amount.
Such a correction would not be perfect since (a) you don't know for sure whether the error was from the previous day versus earlier and (b) it doesn't correct any of the cases where adjustments didn't cause negative result. Still, it leads to better data quality than making no correction and avoids the confusion of negative daily counts.

The NJ correction should be in the live feed. Going forward, our API will no longer be focusing on including Pending in our "Total". You can find more detail on our API Page

I'm writing because there seems to be a discrepancy between the number of daily new US cases on your site vs the CDC website. According to my calculations based on numbers reported on https://covidtracking.com/us-daily/, there were 528, 723, 846 new positive cases reported on March 14, 15 and 16. Here is a screenshot of those dates and numbers:
The CDC's website shows a chart with different numbers for the 15th and 16th.

As you can see, the CDC chart doesn't show the exact numbers. However, I drew red lines to show the approximate numbers for each bar for the last three days. The number for the new positives on the 14th seems to be the same, ~528. However, the CDC charted values aren't close to what the covidtracking website is reporting for the 15th and 16th. Looks like ~1,000 for the 15th and ~780 for the 16th. Some of the other dates appear to be a mismatch as well.
I am wondering if there is something I am missing, or if there is a mistake in one of the website's calculations.

it may be because our daily numbers are as of 4 pm ET. the total number on 3/16 for us was 4,019 while the cdc has 4,226, so we're definitely in the same ballpark. states report their data at different times on different days so i wouldn't focus too much on the precise number each day. a trend line would be more useful.

Also I find the CDC's data rather opaque and confusing. There is no way to know exactly where it is coming from or what their update process is, nor an issue tracker to leave questions or suggestions...
